Das ,jüdische Prag‘ ist eines der markantesten urbanen Narrative der europäischen Moderne. Es lässt sich als Historie und zugleich als Erzählung analysieren, als Geschichte eines komplexen nationalen und kulturellen Spannungsfeldes von Kulturkontakten und Kulturkonflikten. Der Akzent liegt hier auf der Erzählung und damit der Imagination (Vorstellung), Narration (erzählerische Anordnung) und Figuration (bildliche Darstellung) jenes „jüdischen Prag“. Diese Konstruktion erfolgte um 1900 in einem spezifischen Kontext: Ihre Akteure waren zumeist Söhne deutsch-jüdischer wie tschechisch-jüdischer Assimilation, deren Integrationsversprechen sich auch und gerade angesichts der Nationalisierungsbewegungen als uneinlösbar herausstellte. In diesem Umfeld erfolgte die Neuerfindung des ,jüdischen Prag‘ als eines säkularen, d.h. weniger religiösen als vielmehr kulturellen und politischen Selbstentwurfs inmitten der Moderne um 1900.

“Jewish Prague” is one of the most remarkable urban narratives of European modernism. It can be analyzed both as history and as a story – of the complex national and cultural interplay between cultural contacts and cultural conflicts. The focus here is on the story and thereby the imagination, narration, and figuration of this “Jewish Prague.” This construct emerged around 1900 in a specific context: its protagonists were mostly sons of assimilated German as well as Czech Jews, whose promise of integration was unfulfilled, not least due to the nationalist movement. This environment resulted in a reinvention of “Jewish Prague” as a secular, i.e. less religious and instead cultural and political, self-narrative in the midst of modernism around 1900.
