Wiedergeburt ‚von unten‘: Jakub Jan Ryba (1765-1815)
– ‘Reborn from Below’: Jakub Jan Ryba (1765-1815)

The teacher, cantor and composer J. J. Ryba dedicated himself to his Czech mother tongue both in theory and practise. He wrote scholarly texts in the Czech language and composed Czech sacred music. Additionally, he popularised the new tonic prosody by settings of poems written in accentual verse. This trend is particularly evident in Ryba’s Funeral Songs (1805). Because of their clarity and the fact that they were easy on the ear, his compositions contributed to the dissemination of accentual verse among the common people (even outside of Prague).
